The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Bauchi State says it handled 9,969 human rights cases between January and October 2026, with 6,664 still pending.

The State Coordinator, Yachit Dala, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Bauchi.

Dala said the commission resolved 3,305 cases within the period, while the remaining cases were still awaiting resolution.

She said the complaints involved gender-based violence (GBV), rape, sexual and domestic violence, mistreatment, abandonment of parental responsibilities, and violations of civil and political rights.

According to her, the commission receives, assesses and registers complaints to facilitate their resolution.

She explained that the commission also investigates allegations and establishes special panels or tribunals to hear petitions and review testimonies.

Dala said the NHRC provides support to victims and makes recommendations to facilitate amicable settlement of cases.

She, however, identified inadequate funding, low public awareness and illiteracy as major challenges affecting the commission’s operations.

The coordinator urged members of the public to report human rights abuses to the commission.

She also called on youth and women’s groups to intensify awareness campaigns and take the lead in efforts to combat human rights violations.
