The Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, NILDS, Professor Abubakar Sulaiman, has reaffirmed that legislative autonomy remains the cornerstone of Nigeria’s democracy.

This is contained in a statement made available by the Media Adviser to the DG, Mohammad Abdulkadri.

Speaking at the end of a sabbatical paper presentation by Professor Shola Omotola at NILDS’ permanent site in Abuja, Professor Sulaiman emphasized that true legislative independence is essential for effective law-making, representation, and oversight.

According to him, when lawmakers have the necessary authority and resources, they can genuinely reflect the people’s will as well as strengthen democratic governance.

Commending Professor Omotola’s paper, titled “Towards Deepening Legislative Autonomy in Nigeria: Possibilities and Limitations,” the DG described it as valuable in advancing research and scholarship at NILDS.
